NME is reporting today that the long-awaited and rumored American Idiot movie has been given a "green light" by HBO, who happens to be backing the film.

The music site is also reporting that Billie Joe will be starring in the film as St. Jimmy, the character he played in the American Idiot Musical.

Billie Joe spoke with NME about it in brief. Here's what he had to say:

That’s the plan right now, yeah. We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.

News about the film has been silent for a couple years now. There seemed to be a break through back in 2011 when it was reported that Universal Pictures was in negotiations to begin work on the film with Playtone, a production company ran by Tom Hanks. It was also reported that Michael Mayer would be directing the film as it would be an adaptation of the American Idiot Musical for the screen.

Now that Billie Joe says HBO is backing the film, it is certain that Universal is no longer involved but whether Playtone/Tom Hanks and Michael Mayer are still involved is up in the air.
