[caption=Green Day performing at 2009 VMAs]082912_greenday-vma2009-rehearsal.jpg[/caption]In anticipation of Green Day's performance at this year's Video Music Awards, MTV has written an article looking back on how important Green Day has been for the VMAs and how every performance has proven to be better than the last.

In the article, MTV gives high praise to the band's four performances, starting in 1994 with "Armatage Shanks," and all the way through 2009 with "East Jesus Nowhere."

Luckily for all us, they'll be back at the 2012 Video Music Awards, debuting a song off their upcoming ¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tre! trilogy. And while they're not up for any awards, we're willing to bet, based on previous efforts, they're going to make a permanent mark on this year's show, too.

MTV seems to be pretty excited to have Green Day back once again and can't wait for them to perform. We, of course, feel the same. It'll certainly be interesting to see which song the band plays as they've had a history of doing the unexpected (see: "Armatage Shanks" and "East Jesus Nowhere"). Can anyone say "Stay the Night"?

When it comes to stealing the show, nobody does it better than Green Day. We can't wait to see what they do this year.
