Song Of The Week: "Reject"
By Aska /Sep. 6, 2011 / Comments
This week's Song of the Week is the defiant Reject, off Green Day's fifth album, Nimrod. Reject was inspired by a letter sent to Green Day in 1996 from an irate parent complaining about Green Day's "rubbish" music and the concern she had over the band's influence on youth. Billie Joe wrote a response to that letter, and in his response was the line 'That's the difference between you and me. I do what I want... You do what you're told', which later made it into Reject's lyrics.
Here are the scans of those letters (thanks to greenday.net):
Parent's complaint letter
Billie's hand-written response
There doesn't seem to be any live footage of Reject floating around, however there is this live recording from November 1997 at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, which was released as a B-side of some Redundant singles.
