That kind of universality is one of songwriting's great keys; the ability to maintain it for the course of a concept album is the genius of Billie Joe Armstrong, acknowledged thief/magpie that he might be. The additional glimmer to the project was timing: Armstrong's teen epic spoke truths about a country in crisis in its wilderness years, the period before "Change" became the answer to the far right's propaganda machine.
