  • The Dallas Morning News: "For a snot-nosed punk band like Green Day, maturity is best tackled in tiny increments. On its recent Warning CD, the manic Bay Area trio expanded upon its trademark three-chord blitzkrieg bop by dabbling in slower tempos and jazzier styles. But in concert Thursday night at the Bronco Bowl, Green Day played down its recent growth spurt and played up its time-honored image as the velocity-crazed goofballs of punk. And you can't blame them. As interesting as it might have been to hear them reinvent themselves, the mosh-minded capacity crowd didn't come to hear musical change-ups. They came to rock, and Green Day wasn't about to kill their buzz. They did toy with their rhythms now and again, testing out a rockabilly-ish beat in the new Blood, Sex and Booze and propelling another tune with swinging, Gene Krupa-style percussion. Yet those were the exceptions to the louder-faster rule. From the grunged-out stutter-strut of Brain Stew to 300 mph rockers such as Welcome to Paradise, they stuck to their familiar blend of bubble-gum melodies and jackhammer instrumentation. Like most Green Day shows, the music often took a backseat to the band's high jinks. Billy Joe Armstrong played the role of court jester to the hilt – shining a huge beam light in fans' eyes, doing impromptu Bruce Springsteen impressions and, when all else failed, riffing on his pet subject: masturbation."
  • "This was my first Green Day concert, and I've been a fan for 7 years so this was a HUGE thing for me. We got up to the stadium and I stuck my head out the window and started screaming my head off. I walked up to the front and there were the tour buses. So I had to stop and pose for a picture, of course. We got to the doors and the line was huge. The Get Up Kids' set ended about 9:00 after that they thanked Green Day for putting them on tour and Green Day's stage started being set up. I'm such a loser. I was freaking out and hyperventilating. I was up against the bar in the pit and Bronco Bowl is tiny so I knew I'd be hella close. They were done setting up on about 9:30 and Green Day came on. When Mike walked on I screamed my ass off and got teary-eyed. I was right next to him. Like five feet away, 'could have touched him' close. They started with Nice Guys Finish Last and in the words of Billie, 'I'm so fucking happy I could cry.' Then Billie was like, 'I'm going to run for Governor of Texas! Vote for me in 2002! And our theme song will be...' He started to play Blood, Sex And Booze. It was cool as hell. They played for about two hours and fifteen minutes. During the end of Warning two guys were basically killing each other. Billie stopped the song and yelled at them. He was like, 'Hey, you two. Stop fighting, we're here to have a good time. No, let's not kick them out. Instead make them shake hands. OK guys, shake hands and you won't get kicked out. Now get naked. And rub your nipples.' It was such an awesome show. I got squirted with Billie Joe's squirt gun and Mike's water bottle. Never again will I wash my Dookie shirt. I can honestly say I had the time of my life. Billie even said we were the best first show they've ever had."
