The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has just announced its class of 2015 inductees and Green Day are officially in! The band will be inducted in April alongside Lou Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joan Jett, Ringo Starr, Bill Withers, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Green Day were inducted in their first year of eligibility, a feat that only the most iconic bands have accomplished.
The ceremony will take place in Cleveland, Ohio at the Public Hall on April 18 of next year. Green Day are expected to perform three songs at the ceremony, as is customary for active inductees. Green Day have attended and performed at multiple Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in the past, namely for the inductions of the Ramones and Guns N' Roses.
Along with this news, Rolling Stone has released a series of interviews with each of the inducted artists. Billie Joe's interview touches on the band's roots at Bay Area punk clubs, their continued relevance in modern music, and the future of Green Day. Upon hearing that the band would be inducted next year, Billie Joe said that the band is honored and "in a surreal state right now."
Green Day Authority would like to congratulate Green Day on this deserved recognition of years of hard work (and shenanigans, too). Legions of fans, both in this community and elsewhere, are proud to call Green Day a favorite band and a piece of themselves. It's pretty amazing that a group formed by a couple of teenagers in the eighties has reached so many and had such a lasting effect on music as a whole. The future is bright, and Green Day show no signs of slowing down!
