Rumors had been going on for well over a week that the band would make an appearance, and they didn't disappoint. Billie Joe confirmed the show (finally) on Twitter this morning saying
It turns out that Billie was only joking on Radio One earlier this week that the band would be playing "Dookie" in it's entirety, instead, Billie Joe posted a setlist on Instagram, which included more songs than they were allowed to play. NME write how Billie Joe refused to leave the stage after multiple attempts from organizers to cut their set short. Here's a recap from NME
At numerous times during the set, the organisers attempted to get the band to finish, but Armstrong seemed determined to carry on. However, he did curtail the band's 2004 single 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams', telling the crowd: "We're having a little fucking problem with time."
However, the band then seemed set on defying the festival organisers, with Armstrong shooing away anyone who tried to turn off his guitar. He even told the crowd: "Fuck time, I'm going to play for as long as I want to." Even when the coverage ended on the Main Stage, the band still ploughed on, leaving a large group of fans to watch a distant screen from behind a security cordon.
Here's a pretty awesome video showing festival goers sprinting across the area trying to get in to watch Green Day perform at the smaller tent.
You can find the setlist, photos and more on the tour page.
BBC3 will be showing Green Day's performance at 8pm tonight. We'll post a video if someone can capture it.
