2,000 Light Years Away
Posted by Jonny on November 22 2009
This is about the first time he saw Adrienne, and then he left to go back on tour and he felt like she was so far away; also the first time he saw her she came up to him and asked him were she could buy his album.

This song is about a girlriend that Billie or one of the band memebers had. And the song talks about how it dosen't matter how far you are away from your love of your life whether its 2 mies 2,000 miles or 2,000 lightyears away you will always think about them and always love them.

This is the ultimate love song ever made by Green Day in my opinion. Pure love.
The very first verse is not as joyful as you might think, as Billie clearly states that this is a song about unhappy and somewhat forbidden love. The character tries to fokus his mind and get control over the raging feelings of pure love and possibly reject in his heart, he is alone, not loved by the one he wants the most (or atlest he thinks so).
The love almost drowns him and he cant control it anymore, but in respect for her or of fright for change and consequense, he choses not tell her the way he feels for her.
The Chorus basicly describes how madly in love he are with her, and that he does'nt have a choice anymore. She holds his heart (malekite) so tight. And he does'nt want her to neighter. He loves her.
The ending is hopeful, he can somewhere in the distance her them together. But at the moment, it feels far away. Maybe this is the courage he needs to really reach out to her and tell her how he feels. The end in the tunnel.
I love her, and got her by listening to this song. And that is why I identify with the song 2000 light years away by Green Day.

Billie Joe wrote this song after the first time he kissed Adrienne. Afterwards, he had to go home and be without her, and he realized how much he missed her. He realized how far away he felt from her, and exagerrated the length to, '2,000 Light Years Away.'

One for the Razorbacks
Posted by Jacob Lankford on June 07 2009
I am from Arkansas so this is by far my favorite song. Its about a girl named Juliet from Arkansas, whom the band had met, the lyrics suggest that Juliet cannot find a guy who can make her happy so Billie's saying "Look this direction, i know its not perfection, its just me, i want to bring you up again now." so that she will see that Billie's standing there, for her if she needs him.

This song, personally, is one of my all-time favorites. It's about a girl (they call her Juliet probably because of Romeo and Juliet) a girl who has been hurt and is starting to think that life is full of pain and destruction. But there's a boy who is trying to tell her to open up her heart to him so he can meke her happy. It's kind of a sweet little love story. More romantic than Jesus and Whatsername.

Posted by David Bryce on February 13 2010
The song is based on the band's experience moving out of their parents' houses and into an abandoned house in Oakland, CA where the band members, along with several others, lived without paying rent. The house was quite broken-down but to them it became home, and this sentiment is described in the song.

Living on the streets, working the downright hard streets, and just making it to have your music heard. The band left home and they're on their own just to play and stay alive in their town. It can be considered lowlife, but it ends up being paradise to them and just what they needed.

This song is about someone finally leaving their home, and basically they are saying "fuck you" to their parents. I think "Paradise" is a sarcastic way of saying wherever that person is living now ('slums', 'broken homes').

Private Ale

In this song, a boy is in love/lust with a girl who already has a boyfriend. He goes for long walks alone, thinking about his future. But he can't make himself care about his future, because his thoughts are so focused on the girl he loves/wants. He realizes that he's ended up across the street from her house and starts thinking about her. He wonders if she's alone or with her boyfriend. For a little while, he gives his thoughts free rein and imagines everything he wants to do with her ("let my imagination go" ... "through my veins temptation flows." Then he sits down "on the hard concrete" and keeps thinking about her.

In a general sense, it's just when your love for someone drives you up the wall, but you just can't muster up the courage to tell them, or if you just can't get through to them how you feel.

He is to the point where he's going to go mentally insane if he can't have her. He claims he can't trust himself anymore, and is afraid he'll hurt himself.

Who Wrote Holden Caulfield
Posted by Jorge Chávez on May 26 2009
Basically, this song is about the character Holden Caulfield from the book The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, one of Billie's favorites.
It describes the personality and attitude of Holden about ending up doing nothing and being hopeless about people, for example: "There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy, there's no motivation [...]"
And then "[...]Frustration makes him crazy[...]" is the conclusion to Holden's attitude.
Holden Caulfield is almost always saying things that he considers not important and then he quits an idea that he was really wanting to do, like calling someone on the phone.
There are so many things on the book related to the song that it would be hard to list them all in here, so I just added some examples.
Im conclusion, if you read the book and then listen to this song, it's is 100% sure that you will end up saying: "This song is so true" "Yeah, that is Holden" etc.

Best Thing In Town
Posted by josh on August 18 2009
To me this song has a double meaning. one is of acid and getting high, and the other is of a girl that Billie likes. Or possibly getting high with the girl he likes. The phrase, "come with me and lets go for a ride" I interpret as him talking to the girl saying do you want to get high with me? Then he says, "follow me into the other side" which i think is describing one of the feelings of getting high. Also he says, "seeing colors and all i hear are sounds," another thing i associate with getting high. But then again he also says, "cause i know that your the best thing in town." I tend to think that he's saying this to the girl.
