At the Library
Posted by SaintJimmy1039 on September 21 2009
Billie wrote this song about a girl he saw in the library and liked. "Hey there lookin' at me. Tell me what do you see?" "Try to find the words I could use, don't have the courage to come up to you...". He thought he'd have a chance but then he found out she was seeing someone. "Staring across the room, are you leaving soon, I just need a little time. What time? AH!"

I remember Billie saying somewhere that it was about an ugly girl he saw in the library and figured he had a chance with her but then he figured out she already was with someone.

This song is pretty self explanitory, it tells a story of how Billie Joe was at the library and he sees a girl he wants to ask out, and questions himself weither he should or not. Then her boyfriend comes to pick her up and he realizes it wasn't worth it/he lost his chance.

I just think it's about thinking out loud kind of. As in Billie Joe is supposed to be studying or reading or something (since he's in a library), but he gets distracted by this girl and randomly wonders if she would go out with him. He wonders if he should just go for it and ask her out but before he actually does anything the girl's boyfriend shows up and they both leave. That leaves Billie to go back to whatever he was doing before he noticed the girl.

It's a song about desperation when not around the person you love. It makes you wanna scream and kick and punch, and it's just so terrible that it's plain beautiful. I mean- how can you regret having someone to care about instead of plain old apathy...?

I Was There

Al Sobrante wrote the lyrics when he was still in Green Day. I think he wrote them about how he knew he was gonna leave Green Day. It seems like in the lyrics, he knew Green Day was gonna be big, and he knew that he could always say that in the beginning that he was there.

I think this song is basically about Billie's reflection on the things he's done in the past, the good and the bad.
2/10
Posted by Amanda on June 03 2009
I think that this song is just about the past and how is is indeed "the past". It talks about past girlfriends, names, things he has forgotten, but it also talks about not letting it get him down or causing him too much sorrow. Throughout the song he looks back into his past, good and bad, and also the future. Basically, the moral of the song, to me, is that the past is the past and live for today but don't forget about yesterday. Remember? He said, "There's much more life to live"

It's about looking back on the experiences you've had, and people that you knew but have now become separate from. You remember the people, and the sights, and the place you've been, and you just don't want to forget everything that's happened. A sort of melancholy song, written by John Kiffmeyer. Could be about his experience in Green Day, as he left just after he wrote this song.

This song is about someone looking back on their life so far, and remembering all the good times they've spent with the people they once loved, they are thinking about how much they want to relive their past and make it last forever, but they are also realising that they have so much more life to live and a lot more good times to look forward to.

I think this song is about the feeling of nostalgia. Looking back and thinking about times in your life, and then realizing that there's much more ahead of you and looking to the future
9/10
Posted by Jorge Chávez on May 26 2009
This song is about the sadness some people feel about growing up and being distant in time from the good times of their life. The only consolation is that you were there, but that doesn't guarantee that you'll feel happy.
It starts by going backward remembering everything, "looking back upon my life" "each one is a memory I look back on so often".
"I look into the past, and I want to make it last" is clearly defining the thing that missing so much youth days makes you remember almost every time, and by remembering every single detail, you are making it last, and somehow, living it again at least in your mind.
Finally, the constant repetition of "I was there" stresses the sadness about being there and at the same time, gives some consolation about being far away in time from there.

Disappearing Boy

I think that this song is about how much Billie Joe and his siblings disliked their stepfather. The verses are a reflection on the emotions he felt when he or his mother were near the stepfather.

This song to me is about Bille being insecure. Being alone and fearing it really, it's anxiety getting the best of you, and hey we've all been there hah! I can really relate, great song!

This song is about Billie always blending into the background at school.

It's about his Mom not paying much attention to him when she's with any guys she went out with. or what ever.

Posted by Jake on June 01 2009
This song is about Billie Joe really being an outcast of sorts and no one really paying attention to him. It's about him being ignored and not really fitting in. "When I walk in crowded room, I feel as though it is my doom, I know that I don't belong." These lines in the second verse show Billie's frustration.

one of the most under-rated songs about pot ever written, if you ask me. billie wrote it about his early pot experience(s). im sure lots of people can identify with some of the imagry of the lyrics... i know i have at one time or another.

Posted by John on May 26 2009
This song has the same meaning as The band in general. A song about a day spent lying around, hanging with freinds, smoking weed, and doing pretty much nothing all day. Since Green Day are no longer a group of stoners who live in sqauts they admit they think they have the worst name in the history of Rock 'N' Roll. The name still stays though.

Going to Pasalacqua
Posted by Sexy Joe on September 01 2009
When I listen to the lyrics, to me this song is about being close to or liking someone ("infatuation touches me") when they become ill or are dying ("would you last forever?"). I think, in the chorus ("you and I together...we'll run away, far away") Billie is dreaming up what he wishes he and the person in the song could do; how they'll make it through what's happening and how he'll be there for them ("in for nasty weather, but I'll take whatever you can give that comes my way") basically, he knows it's gonna be a bumpy ride, but he doesn't care.

This song is about a girl supposedly named Jennifer that Bille Joe was falling for when he was young. It talks about running away with her, falling in love with her and how she makes him crazy.

Going to Pasalacqua, i think, is about billie joe realilizing that even though he lost a girl who meant so much to him, he had found another who he could love just as much.

Mike Dirnt talked about this song in answer to a question that was asked in the June 2009 edition of big Cheese Magazine: "Is it because you're all parents that you're so concerned about the world around you now?" He said "That has something to do with it. We always wanted to write political songs. There's a song on our first record called "Road to Acceptance", which is a song against racism".

"And I'll sculpt my life for your acceptance"

I always found this song to be Billie's confusion about a girl. Is it the end of a relationship, or the start of one? He once was totally sure, but now isn't. And because of that dire confusion, he can't fall asleep and just wishes it would all go away.

This song is about someone who had previously been in a relationship and is finding themselves still thinking about their ex, and they get frustrated everytime they see them with their boy/girlfriend. All they want to know is if their ex still thinks about them too.

Posted by Justin Z on May 26 2009
A song about a guy (Probably Billie) who just got out of a relationship with a girl. The guy still has feelings for the girl and it pains him whenever he sees her. He wonders if he will ever get over his ex girlfriend and he can't stand it when he sees her with her new boyfriend. He wants to know if she still has feelings for him like he does for her, and he questions himself "To this day I'm asking why I still think about you."
2/3
Posted by Maria on May 26 2009
I think its about not being able to get over someone. You know they don't like you and it probably won't work anymore and you keep telling yourself and other people you're over it. But deep down you still love them and think about them a lot.

Billie said this was about some prank he pulled in school where he actually put 409 in one of his teacher's coffeemakers.

This song is basically "looking back now,at where I have gone wrong." (In the chorus) In 2nd or 3rd grade,Billie Joe put formula 409 in his teacher's coffee (Hence the name). So he's looking back at where he's gone wrong, and the part in the chorus:"My interests are longing to break through these chains, these chains that control my future's aim" is him referring to his first thoughts of dropping out of school.

Posted by Rasmus P on June 02 2009
Well, the story goes that Billie Joe once put 409 in his teacher’s coffee. I think it's about when you sick of listening to someone (a teacher), you're going away to another world when they’re talking to you. It is probably also about how annoying it is to be interrupted when you're dazing! Still the chorus tells that it’s a shame that they can’t get along.
I think Billie Joe really wanted to get along, but just couldn't because it was so boring.

A very involved picture of a love scene... As Billie himself put it, "That was some pretty sappy shit." Though at the time, it's what they had to write about. Modern day 1,000 Hours? Last Night On Earth. The best love song Billie's written to date (says him).

"Up at your window, I see a shadow; silhouette of your grace." Beautiful imagery!
This song is about sitting outside in the evening being close to the one you love... and having sex with the person "Passionate love to be all night long."

Only Of You

This song is about wanting someone that deep down you know you will probably never have, but yet you still can't stop thinking about them every moment of the day.

The One That I Want
Posted by Jnet on June 10 2009
This is a classic song of the desperate feelings of young love. The boy is sitting in his room yearning to be with the girl he wants. He can't stand to be separated from her. He's never felt this way before, and he can't stop thinking about her - even when they're apart. He believes his feelings will last, and he's wondering if anything will improve (if they'll be able to get together).

I Want To Be Alone

Does the title not explain it pretty well?
If not: it's about someone who's trying to deal with a problem themselves, but other people keep interfering and offering a shoulder to cry on or some support. The person with the problem, however, doesn't want their help and just wants to be left by themselves to deal with it.

The song title says it all really, it's about being fed up and just needing some time alone to collect your thoughts and to dwell. in your emotions

This song is about needing to be alone with your thoughts and how annoying it is when people can see you're upset about something and they keep bothering you about it, you pretty much just want to tell them to fuck off.
